The Confession

It was Saturday night, stretched into Sunday’s morning. The TV was on, quiet though. He was on his back, looking into the ceiling, and occasionally at the meandering TV pictures. His mind wandered through canyons and mountains of thought, letting ideas flow in and out as easily as an Irish creek, and allowing his hands to trace her arms and shoulders like a child in the Sistine Chapel. Absorbed in her own direction of thought, she had her right leg wrapped across him, and her right hand clasped his collar, as per usual.

“Hey,” she whispered, “I need you to tell you something.”

“I just…I’ve been thinking and I need you to know.” She sat up, as to stress the seriousness of what she was about to say. “You’ve become so important in my life. The last person I was with, I was young and maybe a little naïve, but you…you’ve made everyone else completely irrelevant.” She paused, “You’re it for me. You’re the dream I didn’t have to fall asleep for.”

“I don’t know much in this world.” He took a deep breath, still taking in her confession, taking it slowly, like a whole new world was opening up in front of him, which, in a way, it was. “I know only a few little things that are 100% fact. I know that I hate anybody that drives a truck, that the sun fuels itself through nuclear fusion, and I know that I am hopelessly in love with you.” He saw a few tears building up inside her eyes, something he didn’t see very often. He stretched his hand to her cheek, preparing himself to wipe away whatever moisture that would leave her perfect hazel eyes. “I’m sorry, but I’m not going anywhere. I’m yours.”

“It’s not even a question anymore. It’s you. I’ve become, and I hope this doesn’t sound weird, but I’m obsessed. You are everything to me, and I can’t imagine what life would be like without you, and I pray I never have to find out.”

“No no no, I know exactly what you mean. Everything I do, no matter how big or small, there is a part of you that I see and do it for. I see you in everything; everything in this world reminds me of you, and I love it. I can’t tell you how much I want to spend forever with you.” He paused and pressed his jaw slightly forward, and chuckled. “I just hope you don’t change your mind when…when I’m balding, and start snoring, and can’t swing you in my arms and carry you to bed.”

“Hmm…” She smiled and paused “Well one day you might not be able to carry me around like your little lap doll, and I won’t be able to run into your arms, and my tits will sag, but as long as our shaky hands still find a way to hold on to each other, that’s all I will ever need.”

He felt his gut begin to pull. His heart was lost, and he could feel nothing except the gravity of her love. Every photon that she emitted was a miracle, and he strained his eyes to see as much of her as he could. If he looked hard enough, he felt like he could see underneath it all. They were making themselves completely open to each other, he saw that. He left himself free to her will, letting her explore the boundaries of him, trusting her to give her free reign of his heart. Her soul and mind were open to him; she opened herself up to him just as he did, and he cautiously took a step inside, careful not to break anything. He saw everything in her. He saw himself, his future, and his dreams all in her midnight glow. Things always seem magnificent upon first entrance, especially after 11PM. He walked inside her beautiful mind, all of its glory and magnificence, but amidst all of the love and purity he found in her, there was something he wasn’t sure about, something that gave him pause, but there was nothing left to say about it. It was time to let silence fill the void of conversation, and they both found themselves deep in sleep while the TV remained silent and colorful.

The night changed, and outside the stars hid back into the darkness to let the sun shine once again. In her sleeping state, she remained still and peaceful, only moving her body to pull him into a proper spooning position. Unaware of what he saw in her mind, he kept this image of her as a perfect figure. Her pedestal was high, and for now, his dreams of high gas mileage minivans and Dairy Queen would keep his heart happy. The sun rose into the window, shining its light upon the sleeping couple, another morning in the life of their relationship. The two would wake up an hour before noon to a brilliant blue sky and gentle day, but by the time evening came around, the clouds would roll in, and a rain would come, a very heavy rain indeed.
